Perspectives
I have always enjoyed optical illusions. It amazes me that just a simple change in perspective can create an entirely new picture. I have found the journey we are on to have given me several changes of perspective. Most of my life could usually be described as one dimensional, focused on the normal day to day tasks of work and family routines we all have. Occasionally my perspective would change towards things that are more meaningful. This usually happened when associated with our short-term mission work or some other spiritual event. Seeing first hand how people in Mexico, Brazil, Peru, and the Dominican Republic with very little possessions live, and live contently, my perspective towards my material things has changed. Witnessing Christians in Japan, a land of devout Buddhists and Shintos, changed my perspective of the freedom of worship we have in America. Working with people who suffered decades of oppression in Ukraine changed my perspective and appreciation of the freedoms I had taken for granted for so many years. I have realized, however, that just like a simple shift of the eyes can change our perspective of an optical illusion, a brief loss of focus on what is truly important can have lasting impacts on our personal and spiritual growth.
I can't wait to see what other changes in my perspective God has in store for me as we move to Peru. We will be immersed in a new culture with a new language and new customs. Much of what I know of as "normal" and comfortable will be changed in my new home. I am excited not only for me but for my family to experience some of these perspective changes. I can't wait for my kids to see the world in a way completely different than those children who never leave their own country. A change in the way we look at the world can be a powerful tool for evangelizing to it. We understand a little better what makes a person who they are, and we can relate better to that person when trying to reach them for Christ. I hope and pray that the insights and experiences God has given me will be useful in furthering His kingdom. One perspective that cannot change, no matter where in the world we are, is the truth of the gospel. I pray that as we continue on this journey, my perspective of JESUS will not change but my relationship with him will grow.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Becoming a Christian is the ultimate change of perspective.
